About Us

The NT Oriental Emporium is a leading retailer for Asian groceries in the Top End.

Kivi Lay and his wife Vicki Lay both emigrated from East Timor to Australia as refugees in 1975 to escape the war. After working cleaning jobs and as a porter for the Travelodge Hotel, Kivi saw an opportunity in the market for the import and sale of Asian groceries and shop goods.

In 1988 the first store was opened in Cavenagh Street Darwin selling porcelain goods and Asian gifts. Their business thrived and in 1989 relocated to Bagot Road Coconut Grove where it subsequently was named and remains trading to this day.

This was a major step forward for the company and family and this resulted in the creation of the LayGroup which includes property development and the Asian United Food Service which is the wholesale foodservice division.

Since its inception, the NT Oriental Emporium has prided itself on delivering to its customers the best available Asian grocery lines at the best possible price. Their commitment to range and quality will have you wondering and experimenting with spices and sauces to invigorate the soul. The Oriental Emporium is truly the NT’s own gateway to Asia. Come in and see for yourself!

Proudly NT Owned and Operated since 1988.
